Falkirk and Dunfermline failed to produce a goal between them as bottom club Livingston emerged with hope that they can yet survive.

Falkirk were perhaps unlucky not to shade it as they came closest with a Daniel McBreen effort off the crossbar.

It was an untidy game from the start with both teams struggling to keep their footing on a threadbare surface.

McBreen had the first effort on target after 13 minutes but directed it straight at Allan McGregor. Dunfermline hit back, and Scott Thomson fired in a 30-yard free-kick after Jean Francois Lecsinel had been punished. Mark Howard hardly blinked an eyelid as it sailed over.

Both teams were error-prone and Falkirk had a lucky escape when a Howard clearance struck Mark Burchill, but the ball broke kindly for Falkirk.

Dunfermline were giving away too many free-kicks just outside their own penalty area, but Falkirk did not make the most of them.

The home side won a string of corners at the start of the second half, but the closest they came was a timid shot from Kenny Milne that struck Aaron Labonte on the line.

Burchill showed that Dunfermline still carried threat when he rifled over from 16 yards after good work from substitute Bartosz Tarachulski.

But McBreen came even closer at the other end after 79 minutes when he wriggled clear to beat McGregor with a fine shot which struck the top of the crossbar.
