Kevin Kyle eased Kilmarnock's relegation worries with a clinical hat-trick which could prove significant for Falkirk's future.

Falkirk manager John Hughes fielded a veteran defensive line for this crucial relegation clash, but it was an error from one of his old heads that led to the opening goal.

Jackie McNamara, the second youngest of the back four at 35, was short with a headed pass back and Danny Invincibile nipped in ahead of keeper Dani Mallo to square the ball to Kyle, who scored his first Rugby Park goal with an assured finish from ten yards.

McNamara was at fault again in the 26th minute as he was caught in possession by Jamie Hamill. The Killie winger opted to shoot early but Mallo handled his effort comfortably.

The home side were developing an appetite for the game and tackled tenaciously in all areas. Jim Jefferies' side had been noted for their good passing football, but with his side perched precariously only three points above their bottom-placed opponents and with an old-fashioned centre-forward in Kyle they were happy to resort to a direct long-ball game.

Their dominance was reflected in the scoreline in the 33rd minute with a second goal. Garry Hay exchanged passes with Mehdi Taouil wide on the left from a free-kick and the full-back swung over a dangerous cross which Kyle glanced past Mallo.

Kyle's physical presence was the dominant factor in Killie's performance, but he was relieved to remain on the pitch when he slid in late on Lee Bullen having already been booked, but the referee kept his card in his pocket.

Having been toothless in the first half, Falkirk showed more intent immediately after the break. Burton O'Brien burst ahead of his strikers and shot past Alan Combe.

The ball was drifting wide and Combe had to be smart to clear the ball away from the in-rushing Scott Arfield.

The Bairns went closer five minutes later when Combe pulled off a great block from Carl Finnigan's drive. The ball broke to Arfield with the keeper stranded and he looked certain to score, but he fired the ball against the last defender.

It was to prove a costly miss for Falkirk as they were held at arms length by the hosts and the large travelling support began to vent their frustration at Hughes and his curiously negative substitutions.

The match was killed off as Kyle completed his hat-trick.

More defensive dithering by Lee Bullen set up the chance as Invincible robbed him and fed Taouil who crossed deep for Kyle to rise and head into the bottom corner, rounding off a great personal performance.
